Memo: Sunday Sept 14- 2014: Feast of the Holy Cross, Mass for the Martyrs, Shawarma Fest Social and Cultural Day.
Dear parishioners, friends and benefactors of Saint Rafka Church,
May God bless you for continually helping Saint Rafka to grow in holiness, as both a community and a place of worship. This year, it is our privilege to announce with gladness our 1st Shawarma Fest, which will take place on Sunday, September 14, 2014. This event will allow us, along with our friends and neighbors in our communities, to come together to renew acquaintances, to conclude summer days, and to welcome school and liturgical seasons back into our lives.
At 10:30 am, we will gather to celebrate the Holy Eucharist of the Mass on the occasion of the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross, which will be offered for all the martyrs of the faith in the Middle East who have died because of their belief in Christ. We will also pray for all other victims who have died because of hate and evil.
We will conclude the Mass at 11:45 am with a candle processional to the Cross in the garden in front of the church, where we will reaffirm our belief in life, offer forgiveness to our enemy, and ardently call on those who are raging wars of hate and violence to repent and stop the evil that they are doing.
From 12:00 Noon until 6 pm, we will rejoice, eat and socialize, experiencing the best food from Lebanon and the Middle East at the kick-off of our First Shawarma Fest. Food has always provided a great context for our gatherings and a wonderful reason to bring us all together, especially when this food is prepared with fresh ingredients and by wonderful people from our community of St. Rafka. I would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Pierre and Marie Dagher and Mr. and Mrs. Ibrahim and Mireille Dagher and their families for preparing the shawarma and falafel, and of course we all look forward to their famous hummus that is always made from scratch.
2:45 pm will be Broncos Time! We will have a special booth for watching the game, with beverages and chicken wings available for all Broncos fans.
SPECIAL ATTRACTIONS: Two of the special attractions this year will be the TARNIB traditional card competition and the Arguileh (hooka) booths, which will be sponsored by the St. Rafka Men's Society. There will also be a booth for homemade Lebanese sweets and goodies, sponsored by the St. Rafka Ladies' Society.
KIDS' AREA: Our joy can never be complete unless our children, the most cherished part of our lives, are with us, in the center of our attention, having fun and getting together because of St. Rafka. I am thankful to Mrs. Gina AbouJaoude for organizing the activities, food, and games for our children.
MUSIC: Mr. Paul Cherabie will be our DJ throughout the day. He will play both American and traditional Lebanese and Middle Eastern favorites, and there will be of course be the Dabke.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  Please contact the rectory if you would like to get involved! There are many things to do for an event like this and we would love for everyone to be a part of it.
My dear people, the best that is going to happen that day is this: we will be together, safe and sound, to pray and celebrate life, to enjoy each other's company along with our children being happy and rejoicing.
I look forward to seeing all of you.
May God bless you all for helping Saint Rafka Church.
